Easy Stollen

2 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp margarine or butter
1 loaf (1 lb) frozen bread dough, thawed
1/4 c red candied cherries, chopped
1/4 c sliced, blanched almonds
1/4 c golden raisins
1 egg, beaten
confectioner's sugar (icing sugar)

In large bowl, knead sugar and butter into dough. Add cherries, nuts, and raisins; knead until well distributed. On well-floured surface pat dough into 10" long oval, about 1" thick, using extra flour if dough sticks. Fold lengthwise, almost in half, to about 1 1/2" from edge. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled, about 35 minutes. Brush with beaten egg. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to rack to cool. Sprinkle with confectioner's sugar.
