Christmas Hermits

1 cup softened, unsalted butter
3 cups light brown sugar
4 Tb. milk
4 large eggs
3 tsp. baking powder
6 cups sifted, all-purpose flour
2 cups seedless raisins
2 cups currants
1 cup chopped nuts
grated rind of 1 medium orange
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 tea. ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375° F. Cream the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the milk and eggs. Sift the baking powder with 3 cups of the flour and add to the creamed mixture. Blend well. Add the raisins, currants, nuts, and orange rind. Mix well. Sift the nutmeg and cinnamon with the remaining 3 cups of flour and add to the creamed mixture. Blend together thoroughly. Drop by rounded teaspoonsful onto a greased cookie sheet about 1 1/2-inches apart. Bake at 375° F for 20 minutes or until light brown. Remove from pan and cool on wire racks.
Yields: 10 dozen
