French Onion Soup

4 large onions
2 Tbsp butter or margarine
6 cups beef broth
salt and pepper
Sliced French bread
Grated nippy cheese

Slice onions and cook in butter until golden brown. Add broth, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve in ovenproof soup bowls. Top each serving with a lightly toasted slice of French bread sprinkled with grated cheese. Just before serving, place bowls under broiler to partially melt cheese. Serve with more French bread or toasted rolls. Serves 4-6.
